Gordon L. Hankins, 93, of Palm Coast, Florida, passed away on July 24, 2017, with family by his side.
He was born May 4, 1924, in Effingham County, the eldest child of Art. G. and Vera (Henderson) Hankins. He graduated from Effingham High School in 1942 and then entered in the US Navy where he served from February 1943 to December 1945, as a gunner's mate aboard the U.S.S. Hilary P. Jones. On August 26, 1946, the Secretary of the Navy awarded the Navy Unit Commendation to the U.S.S. Hilary P. Jones for extremely meritorious service displayed by her crew in support of military operations against enemy forces.
He was employed by Ford Motor Company from 1959 to 1985.
He is survived by his wife of 74 years, Erma (Hatke) Hankins; daughters, Gloria Shearer and Melody Patton; son, Roger Hankins; grandchildren, Brooke Jones, Nicole Shearer, Kristen Poynts, Craig Jones and Kyle Hankins; five great-grandchildren; sisters, Linda Rose of Effingham and Kae Whitaker of Sigel; and brothers, Melvin (Trudi) Hankins of Effingham and Larry Hankins of Waldemar, California.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Lloyd Hankins; and sisters, Wanda R. Martin, Faye Burch, Shirley Arnold and Marion Zehner.
Heritage Funeral and Cremation Service in Florida assisted the family.
