Maxine's Story

Maxine Rosie Oeltjen, age 90, of Mattoon passed away at 5:00 a.m. on Monday, July 9, 2018 at Heartland Christian Village surrounded by her family.
Funeral services honoring her life will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 12, 2018 at Schilling Funeral Home Pastor Adam Jacobsen. Burial will follow at Resthaven Memorial Gardens. Visitation for family and friends will be held from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, July 11, 2018 at the funeral home.
Maxine was born on December 1, 1927 in Robinson, IL the daughter of Ervin and Helen (York) Cooley. She married Oscar Oeltjen on December 3, 1949. He preceded her in death on June 14, 2007.
Survivors include her daughter, Connie Smith of Cowden, IL; step grandson, Kevin Smith; step great-granddaughter, Kelsie Smith; step great-grandson, Kelso Smith; sisters, Marie Bryant of Villa Grove, IL; Mae Garrett of Mattoon, IL and Larae (Herschel) Sharp of Mattoon, IL; brothers-in-law, Jim West of Arizona and Roy Windhorst of Deshler, NE. In addition to her husband, Maxine was preceded in death by her parents, son-in-law, Jim Smith; half-brother, Everett Cooley; brothers, Everett M. Cooley and Ervin Cooley; and sisters, Mildred Bryant, Erma Koistinen and Mary West.
Maxine attended St. Johns Lutheran Church of Mattoon. As a young girl, Maxine worked on the family farm in Robinson, Illinois and later moved to Mattoon where she met the love of her life, Oscar. After a brief courtship, they married in 1949 and enjoyed 57 years of marriage. Maxine was a homemaker and always had a smile on her face. Maxine was a very giving person and enjoyed helping others. She liked cats and dogs, owning several pets throughout the years. Most of all, Maxine cherished spending time with her family and loved attending family gatherings and reunions. She will be greatly missed by all those who knew and loved her.
