Rita F. Schwerdt, 83, of Effingham, formerly of Sigel, passed away at 9:30 a.m. Sunday, May 7, 2017, in the Evergreen Nursing Center of Effingham.
A Mass of Christian Burial, will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the St. Michael The Archangel Church in Sigel with the Rev. Sunder Ery officiating. Visitation for family and friends will be from 4:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday with a Rosary at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the church. Burial will be in the St. Michael's Cemetery in Sigel. Swengel-O'Dell Funeral Home of Neoga is in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be made to the SEARCH, Special Religious Education, or to the donor's choice. Rita was born Jan. 24, 1934, in Sigel, the daughter of Harry and Dorothy (Ludwig) Schwerdt. She was a member of the St. Michael The Archangel Church of Sigel. Rita was a retired machine operator for General Electric Company of Mattoon.
Rita leaves one sister, Peggy Ballinger and husband Harold of Trowbridge; and several nieces and nephews.
Miss. Schwerdt was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers, Henry, Lawrence, George "'Jack" and Michael Schwerdt; seven sisters, Dorothy Ellison, Eileen Williams, Laverne "Bonnie" Kortte, Emma Harmon, Marilyn Boling and Theresa Joan Schwerdt.
