Walter E. "J.R." Borcherding, age 79 of St. Elmo formerly of Iuka, died on Thursday, June 8, 2017 at St. John's Hospital in Springfield.
Walter was born on April 21, 1938 in Iuka the son of Walter and Bertha (Gragert) Borcherding. On December 19, 1997 he married Sue Hill at Trinity Lutheran in Iuka and she survives him in St. Elmo.
In addition to his wife he is survived by a son, Lyndell Borcherding and wife Meghan of Iuka; a daughter, Beth Crane and husband Cory of Salem; two step-daughters, Pam White and husband Brian of Lincoln and Penny Critcheloe and husband Micahel of Vandalia; 11 grandchildren, Rylan and Brady Crane, Landen and Madilyn Borcherding, Justin, Dyanne and Megan Harvey, Brandy Dahmm and Lindsay, Andrew and Emilee Kistler; eight-great grandchildren and one on the way; two brothers; Bill Borcherding and wife Erma of Iuka and Raymond Borcheridng and wife Phyllis of Mt. Vernon; and a sister Betty Eddings of Iuka.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Reinhardt Borcherding na dwife Darlene; two sisters, Louise Quandt and husband Elemer, and Doroth Wiehle and husband Herman; and a brother-in-law Kenneth Eddings.
Mr. Borcherding was a farmer. He was a former Quartermaster in the Army at Fort Lee, Virginia. Walter was a former Board Member of the Marion County Farm Bureau, Church Bowling League, Air-Evan Promoter, he served with Hospice Care by providing music to patients alongside his wife, and was a member of the Prairieland Pickers.
Services will be held at 10:30 on Monday, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Iuka, with Pastor Clayton Vail officiating. Interment will be in Trinity Lutheran Church Cemetery, Iuka. Friends may call from 4 to 6 pm on Sunday at Rogers-Atkins Funeral Home in Salem. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association or the Donors Choice.
