William C. 'Bill' Ashley, Sr., 90, of Sullivan, formerly of Bethany passed away at 6:12 p.m. Sunday January 28, 2018 in the Sullivan Rehabilitation and Health Care Center.
Celebration of Life services will be 4:00 p.m. Saturday February 3, 2018 in the Reed Funeral Home, Sullivan with the Pastor Ted Hartley officiating. Visitation will be 2 - 4 p.m. Saturday. Memorials are suggested to the Bethany First United Methodist Church or the Bethany American Legion Post # 507. Burial will be at a later date in the Oak Grove Cemetery, Bethany. Bill was born March 26, 1927 in Watson, Illinois, the son of Robert and Virginia Ryan Ashley. He retired from A. E. Staley Company in Decatur and had farmed the family farm in Bethany. He attended the Bethany First United Methodist Church, was a life member of the Bethany American Legion Post # 507, was the past commander of the Bloomington American Legion, participated with the 50 Flags for Veterans group for funerals and started the Young Leathernecks organization in Normal. Bill was a U. S. Marine Corp veteran of WWII having served in the Pacific. He married Lillian Owens in 1947. He later married Arlene Boggs on June 2, 1984 and she preceded him in death on July 22, 2005.
Surviving are his children William 'Bill' (Sheila) Ashley, Jr. of Bethany, Robert D. 'Bob' (Jean) Ashley of Bethany, Myrna L. (Jim) Scritchfield of Bakersfield, California, Gary L. (Alice) Ashley of Edgewood. eight grandchildren and several great grandchildren and several great-great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife and a brother.
