Harold's Story

Harold Dwane Hartman, 90, of Shumway, IL, passed away on Wednesday, June 21, 2017, at Evergreen Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Effingham, IL.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, June 26, 2017 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Effingham, with Rev. Earl Brown officiating. Burial will be in St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery in Strasburg, with military rites. Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 pm. Sunday at Johnson Funeral Home, 1110 N. Fourth Street, Effingham, IL, and from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service on Monday at the church.
Memorials may be made in loving memory of Harold to the Altamont Lutheran Interparish School in Altamont, Trinity Lutheran School in Stewardson, or donor's choice. Online condolences may be shared at www.johnsonandsonsfh.com.
Harold was born on December 10, 1926, to Edward J. and Lydia (Rincker) Hartman in rural Stewardson. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Strasburg, IL.
He served his country in the United States Army from 1945-46 in Japan and the Philippines. After his discharge he went to drafting school in Chicago and worked as a draftsman in Mattoon and Effingham. Harold married Rhea Miller on October 14, 1951 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Island Grove, Wheeler, IL. The couple moved to their farm in 1953 and together they farmed and raised their family of Ann, Lee, and Ray. Harold was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Effingham, Effingham County Farm Bureau, Stewardson American Legion Post 611, and the Effingham VFW Post 1769.
Harold leaves behind his loving wife of 65 years, Rhea; daughter, Ann (Mark) Musser of Beecher City, sons, Lee (Karen) Hartman and Ray (Eileen) Hartman both of Shumway; 9 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; sister, Vera Schmitt of Strasburg; and brother, Dwane (Maude) Hartman of Stewardson.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Ervin Hartman.
