Altamont, Illinois - Alvin Henry Oliver, of Altamont, has changed routes on June 22, 2026. He was born on October 27, 1932, in rural Altamont, the son of Clarence H. and Elva (High) Oliver. He married Karon Lyn Hayes on June 23, 1957.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, June 29, 2026 at the First United Methodist Church, Altamont with Rev. Tonna Percival officiating. A visitation will be held for an hour prior to service time at the church. Memorials may be made to the Altamont First United Methodist Church, Effingham County Animal Shelter, or donor's choice. Gieseking Funeral Home, Altamont is assisting the family with arrangements.

Alvin served in the Army from 1953-1955. He served as occupation forces in Germany attaining the rank of corporal. He served in local Army Reserves several years and attained the rank of sergeant first class. He farmed for several years, and was later employed by the US Postal Service as a rural letter carrier. During his 41 years as a rural carrier, he served his fellow carriers as an officer, steward and newspaper editor.

After retirement, Alvin wrote "Your Town," a weekly series in the Altamont News about local history. He was a lifelong member of the Altamont First United Methodist Church, and served many roles there.

Alvin is survived by his wife, Karon; son, Jon, of Altamont; grandchildren Cody Frailey, Devin (Hali) Frailey, and Bayli (Matt) Ashley. Great-grandchildren Sam, Reece, Fiona, Finn, Caden and Hayes, sister-in-law Kathleen Hayes.

Alvin was preceded in death by his parents, his son David, and his brother-in-law William K. Hayes.
