Dean C. Grissom Obituary

Dean Carter Grissom, 98, a World War Il Veteran & longtime resident of Spring Point Township in Cumberland County passed away on Friday January 26, 2024, at Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center surrounded by his family.

A Celebration of a Life well lived will be at 11:00 am Friday, February 2, 2024, at the Mullen Baptist Church in rural Montrose. Visitation will also be on Friday February 2 from 9:00 to 11:00 am at the church. Military burial to follow service at Mullen Cemetery. The Barkley Funeral Chapel in Greenup is assisting the family.

Dean was born on January 1, 1926. He was a News Years Day baby born to Joseph and Josephine (Carter) Grissom. In 1944 Dean at just 18 years old joined the US Army to serve proudly in Germany during WWII. Later, in 1954 he married Ruth Kingery in Dieterich, Illinois. They were married for 67 years until Ruthies passing in October of 2021.

Dean worked at Young's radiator in Mattoon for many years before becoming a full-time farmer. He also was the Spring Point township supervisor for over 44 years. Dean & Ruth also provided in-home Senior Care for several families in the Effingham area. Dean is survived by his daughter Cindy (Mary Hartke) of Montrose; grandchildren Kimberly (Romeo) Youssef of Oviedo, Flt and Cory (Jeanne) Meier of Funkhouser;

seven great grandchildren Jordan, Sofya, Sarah, Susanna, William, and twins Samuel, and Savannah; son-in-law Dale Donsbach of Effingham; brother Curt Grissom of Mattoon, IL and sister-in-law Marsha Grissom of Sanford, Fl. Dean was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter Kathy Donsbach which he missed dearly; siblings : Ruth and Warren Croy, Donald Wayne Grissom, Ellen and Don Clark, Hazel and Lonnie Elliott, Dale Grissom, and Richard (Dick) Grissom. Brother and sister in-laws Reginald and Delores Flach, Elmer (Gladys) Yocum, Claude Yocum, Leona (Babe) Yocum, and Newton "Buss" (Reba) Kingery.

The family would like to thank the staff at the Veterans Administration, Visiting Angels in Effingham, and all the caring nurses and staff at Sarah Bush Lincoln Hospital.
