Dr. Imogene J. (Homann) Tilford
Dr. Imogene J. (Homann) Tilford, age 89, of Mattoon passed away at 1:05 p.m. on Saturday, November 30, 2019 at Heartland Senior Living.
Funeral services honoring her life will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, December 12, 2019, at St. John's Lutheran Church, 200 Charleston Avenue, Mattoon, Illinois 61938 with Reverend Adam Jacobsen officiating. Burial will follow at Dodge Grove Cemetery. Visitation for family and friends will be held from 9:30 a.m. until time of service at the church. Schilling Funeral Home is assisting the family.
Imogene was born on February 17, 1930, in Mattoon, the daughter of Emory August and Alma Loretta (Walters) Homann. She married William Earl Tilford on December 31, 1968. He preceded her in death on May 14, 2008.
Survivors include her daughters, Cyndia (LeRoy) Jones of Charleston, IL; and Barbara (Gerald) Beals of Punta Gorda, FL; son, John Aleshire of Wauchula, FL; grandchildren, Jean Ann Cutright of Mattoon, IL; Mark (Patricia) Steele of Hudson, WI; Robert Steele of Waco, TX; Edward Steele of Mattoon, IL; April (Rodney) Adams of Charleston, IL; Tina Kibler of Tuscola, IL; Gerald (Melissa) Beals Jr. of Watson, IL; and Curtis (Michael) Aleshire of Palatka, FL; and 14 great-grandchildren; She has a loving sister, Loretta Norene (George) Jenkins of Alta Loma, CA. In addition to her husband, Imogene was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Gerald 'Jerry' (Mildred) Homann and Lionel 'Lonnie' (Madge) Homann; and sister, Yvonne Marie Homann. Imogene had an adopted family; Sharon Stortzum of Gays, IL; along with Sandra and William Donsbach of Altamont, IL.
Imogene worked at General Electric Mattoon Lamp Plant for over 20 years. During her late 40's, Imogene earned her PhD in Psychology, and then taught special education in the Effingham School District. After receiving her PhD, Imogene was honored to have her research book published in the Library of Congress. Imogene believed that you're never too old to accomplish your dreams; age was just a number. She received Lasik surgery at the age of 88, because she was tired of wearing glasses! Imogene was a dedicated gardener; every summer she would grow extra vegetables so she could bless others. She enjoyed playing cards weekly with her friends from St. John's. Imogene was a counselor, good listener, and she always tried to give the best advice. Imogene was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church of Mattoon, the Mattoon Moose Women's Auxiliary, the Mattoon Eagles, and the VFW Women's Auxiliary. Regardless of family drama, Imogene loved her children very much. She will be remembered as a loving, caring grandmother who cherished spending time with her grandchildren, and always helped others when needed. She will also be remembered as a loving caring sister and aunt. Imogene will be greatly missed by all those who knew and loved her.
