Mary M. Sur, 72 of Effingham, passed away Tuesday, September 10, 2019 at Barnes Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, September 16, 2019 at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Effingham with burial in St. Anthony Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Sunday evening at the church with a 6:00 p.m. ladies rosary. Memorial donations may be given to St. Anthony Parish or Neoga Community Unit 3 School District. Online condolences may be expressed at
Mary was born June 27, 1947 in Effingham, the daughter of Andrew G. and Alice A. (Imming) Sur. She is survived by her brothers, Donald (Mary) of Bloomington and Henry (Linda) of Mount Dora, FL, David (Lisa) of Champaign, Roger (Deb) of Effingham; sisters, Sr. Anne Sur, O.P. of Sinsinawa, WI, Rita Devore of Effingham, Paula (Dennis) Ewald of Morton and Janet (Gene) Gobczynski of Bradenton, FL; 16 nieces and nephews and 22 great-nieces and nephews.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents and brother-in-law, Doug Devore.

Miss Sur, that is what I always called her. She was a great teacher who taught my son Barry, in Kindergarten. And the Letter people! And she was always keeping score at the ball games. Even though Miss Sur was retired; those in the Neoga School District who knew her will miss her. Pat

Mary was the first person I met in Neoga. I did my student teacher with her. What an amazing teacher and person! I continued to stay as a teacher for thirty-seven years in Neoga.....My sympathy goes out to the family
